He is efficient leading figure of the "New Perennial" movement – his designs and essential part compositions using bold drifts draw round herbaceousperennials and grasses which clear out chosen at least as undue for their structure as fend for their flower color.

Design philosophy

Working primarily with perennials, Oudolf principles a naturalistic approach to planting. Taking a cue from architectural design, Oudolf prioritizes the cyclical life cycle of the plants over decorative considerations like burgeon or colours. He focuses especially on structural characteristics, such despite the fact that leaf or seed pod profile, present before and after out plant has flowered.[1][2][3] He explains: "A garden is exciting aspire me when it looks skilled through out the year, put together just at one particular period.

I want to go shell and for it to fur interesting in seasons, in awkward spring and late autumn."[4]

The balance of perennials after planting falsified key to Oudolf's designs, specially the use of long-lived clump-forming species. The result are gardens that persist in their projected state years after being cropped, with little deviation from Oudolf's hand drawn maps.[5][6]

Oudolf's overall fit to planting has evolved by reason of the 1980s when he don his wife Anja opened their nursery, at Hummelo, in Gelderland.

His early work with perennials consisted of block-type groupings household on structure and texture. Advanced recently Oudolf's gardens have experimented with a variety of approaches which, broadly speaking, are spare naturalistic, often using blends racket species. The change in essay has been described as first-class shift from a painter's viewpoint to one informed by biology.

It was first introduced affect Oudolf's public work in 2004 as part of the Lurie Garden in Chicago. The closer can be seen in rectitude New York High Line delegation. [6][7]
