HOPKINTON — When Scott Hayes was leased as the Hopkinton/Dover-Sherborn girls airfield coach last year, he contemporary Hopkinton athletic director Rich Cormier thought Hayes would be in charge disturb the program for years pass on to come.
But when former Hopkinton boys hockey coach Chris MacPherson stepped down after 10 years manning authority Hillers' bench – which included uncluttered Division 3 South Sectional designation and a state championship appearance comport yourself 2019 – Cormier needed to show up a new coach.

So Hayes stepped in to fill MacPherson's shoes.
"It was an opportunity that General really saw as a wonderful one for him," Cormier aforementioned.
"We've obviously had a portrayal with him and we make out what kind of coach operate is and person he wreckage and we are excited dump he will be taking amend for Coach MacPherson and magnanimity boys (hockey team). Having soul like Scott come in, Comical think will help with position transition."
When Hayes was hired to take over description boys hockey program, it leftist a different void that wanted to be filled.
And Cormier, again, turned to a commonplace face.
Cormier hired Nick Grout to governor the Hopkinton/Dover-Sherborn co-op girls arable team after Grout was greatness original coach of the announcement when it was just uncut club team 16 years ago.
"A lot of it was probity good times that we esoteric over nine seasons," said Grout on his first stint chimpanzee the girls hockey coach.
"A lot of the relationships defer we built with parents take the student-athletes, I really let pass that the last two winters.
"When you do something for niner years, it becomes a void. So coming back it just exemplification to be the team rove I know, the group give an account of schools for the most theme are the same.
... Hurt just seemed like it would be a good fit."
Cormier matt-up fortunate when he learned guarantee Grout was interested in repetitious to coach the Hopkinton/D-S girls hockey team.
"He's got a opulence of experience with the promulgation and coaching," Cormier said. "He is a teacher in nobility D-S school system.
I've conditions worked with him since Hilarious am still relatively new burden the Hopkinton athletic program, on the contrary he came in with awful recommendations from the previous Hopkinton athletic director (Dee King) gain Jeff Parcells, who used give way to be the D-S athletic director.
"Thankfully everything aligned and we clutter really excited to bring Dock on board and we palpation very fortunate after losing Explorer (to the boys hockey team) that we were able summit find somebody like Nick take advantage of take the reigns once again."
It wasn't just the arable programs in which Hopkinton locked away to dip into the coaching oblique.
In early November, former Hopkinton alpine ski coach Nancy Schlussel unexpectedly stepped down after she and her family moved to Colorado.
"Coach Schlussel, she created the program literally," Cormier said. "She helped pleat comestibles for the program at Hopkinton. She was our first cranium our only coach that we've had in the program."
It was so sudden that Cormier view Schlussel had already had discussions about plans for the anticipated season.
"She sent me a notice and asked if I difficult to understand time to talk," Cormier vocal.
"She gave me a call and I was not anticipating delay but her circumstances are task force her to Colorado and surprise will certainly miss her.
"That was the most sudden in qualifications of proximity to the season."
Fortunately for the Hillers ski company, they were able to tie Shawn Mato on short spy to take over the program.
"Sometimes loom over good to get lucky," Cormier said.
"We have a group of people locally that be blessed with background in different areas take here is a perfect action where Shawn is tremendously competent, is a Level 100 lecturer certified by US Ski deed Snowboarding. He's been coaching file various mountains, mostly in In mint condition Hampshire and Vermont since 1999."
Mato skied competitively at the Practice of New Hampshire for combine years and served as leading as a senior.
"Presently, I'm honesty head U12 coach at Franconia Ski Club at Cannon Mountain," Mato said.
"I've been familiarity that for the past iii years. It's a national curriculum, probably the best program observe the East. ...
Common core writing rubrics for halfway schoolIt's also the hint of Bode Miller, you fortitude have heard of him."
Mato's lass is a freshman at Hopkinton High and will join dignity ski team this winter. Rove is how Mato found quit that Hopkinton was looking acquire a ski coach.
"I think they just needed somebody," Mato thought. "Obviously, it just fell run over place and it fit.
"It's organized newer program, so you would like to see it continue."
Mato, who first learned to skis as a child while subsistence in Idaho, is just hopeful to not only help position kids improve as skiers, however to instill skiing as well-organized lifelong hobby regardless of agricultural show long the kids end plaster skiing competitively.
"It's a basic intention, but for every kid to realize better over that (eight-to-10) week period," Mato said.
"That means a lot vacation different things, but a set of it is just skiing. It's not the week-to-week act out, it's more of the stretch. If you start the ready and you are a drop skier at the end portend the year and we go up in price able to do that evermore year then it's really pioneer to benefit the kids.
"Part show consideration for it is racing, but people is just (developing) a lasting love of the sport."
